Tybee Island is a popular spring break location for good reason. Located about 30 minutes from Savannah, it is the perfect place to spend a few days or the whole week with your family.
Here are seven activities South Key recommends for families looking to enjoy spring break on Tybee Island.
If you want an adventurous activity, there is nothing better than renting a kayak and seeing the island on the water. If you prefer to navigate the kayak with some expert guidance, a kayak tour is highly recommended. Bull River Cruises offers a two-hour tour through Skidaway Narrows and Moon River. And yes, you read that right, Moon River like the song. This Savannah River inlet was named after Savannah’s famous songwriter, Johnny Mercer.
For those who like to fish, it is free to fish from the Tybee Island piers, if you are licensed. Licenses can be purchased online here. If you would like to have a fishing experience, there are several charters that will take you fishing for the day, including:
Something the whole family will love is a dolphin-watching tour! With Captain Derek’s Dolphin Adventure Tour, you can see a pod of dolphins swimming in their natural habitat AND potentially surfing (from the wave-creating machine on the boat). It’s like SeaWorld, but better.
A fun way to see the island without all the walking is to rent some bicycles for the whole family! The island is very bike friendly, so you will be able to make your way around very easily.
TIMS Bikes, Beach & Disc Golf is a great place to rent bikes. They offer single bicycles for adults, bicycles for kids, and even tandem bikes. If you want to rent for multiple days, they can accommodate that as well. While their store is closed in the winter months (Jan and Feb), deliveries to your location may still be available if you call in advance!
While on Tybee Island, make sure you check out the oldest and tallest lighthouse in all of Georgia! A light station that dates back to 1736, the Tybee Island Lighthouse stands 145 feet tall. Located nearby are the lightkeeper cottages, a summer kitchen, and the Tybee Island Museum.
Tickets include access to the lighthouse and the Tybee Island Museum.
Tybee Island has so many great restaurants to choose from, including:
If you are looking for a place to grab some seafood with a view, you can’t go wrong with any of the places on the island.
Of course, when you go to the beach one of the best and most cost-effective activities is simply hanging out with your loved ones at the beach. Grab some chairs and beach toys and camp out on one of Tybee Island’s public beaches for a relaxing day!
Stay on South Beach to be close to downtown and the pier or go to North Beach for a more historic view. North Beach also has the best restaurants like The Deck and of course, North Beach Bar and Grill. MidBeach is a great choice as well because it is close to everything.
Tybee Island is the perfect place for families to spend spring break as there are endless activities to fill your days!
