6 Fun Things to Do in Savannah in February

At South Key Management, we think every month of the year is the perfect time to visit Savannah. But for some people, average temperatures in February make this month the ideal time plan a Savannah vacation. A winter getaway in Savannah this time of year offers several benefits including lower accommodation prices and less tourists to contend with for dinner reservations. Plus, Savannah offers a variety of February events, activities and tours the whole family will love. From the famous Savannah book festival to special Valentine's day dinners at Savannah's historic district restaurants, February is a great time to experience the city's great food and southern hospitality.

Here are some fun things to do in Savannah to this month:

1 – Critz Tybee Run Fest (February 2nd- 3rd)

What better way to start the new year than with a destination race? We know not everyone is a runner, but if you are, the Critz Tybee Run Fest would be a great way to get a race in while on vacation. This annual event offers various race distances across the two days including: a kiddie run, 5k, 10k, half marathon, 2.8-mile beach run, and a 1 mile fun run! February temperatures mean cold weather that's just right for runners, so you won't be running in weather that's too cold or too hot. And whatever event you decide to run, there's no better way to get some winter exercise while enjoying the incredible scenery along the Savannah River.

Tybee Island is not too far from Savannah, so you can stay here and then dash over to Tybee Island for a race then stay to enjoy the beaches, food, and other fun events on the island.  If you missed out on Run Fest this year not to worry! Keep an eye out for this annual event around February of 2025!

2 - Super Museum Sunday (February 11th)

If Museums are your idea of fun, you're going to love Savannah in February. Museum tour groups are less crowded this time of year, so it's a great time to explore the city's rich history and culture. Plus, on Sunday February 11th, many of the city's museums and historical sites are free and open to the public! Super Museum Sunday is a state-wide, annual event that's part of the Georgia History Festival where visitors can explore city museums free of charge. The American prohibition museum, Davenport House, and Georgia State Railroad museum are just a few of Savannah's participating locations. To find a full list of participating Savannah museums, visit the Georgia History Festival website and choose "Cathum County".

Check out Old Town Trolley Tours for transportation to and from Savannah museums and many other city attractions. Museum enthusiasts appreciate Old Town Trolly's "hop-on, hop-off" pass as it allows them to fully enjoy the unique opportunity of Super museum Sunday!

3 – Savannah Book Festival (February 15th-18th)

The Savannah Book Festival is an annual celebration of the written word that takes place in Savannah's historic district. It is free to the public and showcases nationally recognized authors from around the world. Meet authors of a wide range of genres during book signings or simply peruse the festival tents where you can discover new authors and get lunch from a food truck.

The event is over President's Day Weekend with festival Saturday presentations taking place in the theaters, churches, and museums around the historic district. Both book lovers and amateur writers love the Savannah book festival because it's a great place to learn the creative process of some of their favorite authors. People visit from all over the country to discuss ideas with other literary fans while discovering new and upcoming authors.

4- Dinner Detective (February 16th)

If you have ever considered doing a murder mystery party but haven't taken the plunge yet, the Dinner Detective is a great option. This interactive comedy murder mystery dinner theatre show features hilarious actors and live performances you'll love. It's the largest of it's kind and is a great Savannah activity whether you have a large or small group of people. Shows are located at the Hilton Garden Inn and offers one of three options for dinner (chicken marsala, grilled salmon, three cheese ravioli). Come drink, eat, and help solve a murder mystery! Get tickets for the February 16th show or check out other showtimes in March.

5- Explore Savannah's Historic District

Georgia's mild winter weather makes February a great time to explore historic Savannah. Take a walk along river street or spend the day touring restored buildings like Olde Pink House, Davenport house, or Owens Thomas house. We also recommend the First African Baptist Church on Montgomery street, featuring a museum with memorabilia dating back to the 18th Century and beautiful stained glass windows. About a block from the African Baptist Church is the American Prohibition museum and City Market - an 18th Century open air market with shopping and delicious things you'll only find in the South. Mild February weather might also permit a visit to Forsyth park where you can make a wish at the city's oldest fountain or explore the gorgeous Mansion on Forsyth park.
