5 Reasons to Visit Savannah in August

The summer can be a great time to visit Savannah, but August is especially perfect. By then, the kids are out of school awaiting the last vacation jolt before starting a new school year. And work has slowed down a bit mid third quarter, allowing everyone more time to escape for a quick weekend away or even a midweek trip. Beyond all of the usual reasons to visit Savannah (history, Tybee Island, restaurants, shopping), there are several fun celebrations occurring in August that make it an optimal time to come pay us a visit!

Here are five celebrations happening next month that South Key Management employees recommend enjoying.

1 – National Aviation Week in Savannah

The week of August 19th is National Aviation Week and what better way to celebrate it in Savannah than an ariel tour by helicopter!

There are several different tour options based on what you want to see or what your budget is. Here are a few options:

  • Bridge Tour – this tour flies over the Port of Savannah, $40 per person
  • Tybee Island Tour – this tour takes you past Fort Pulaski to Tybee Island where you will see the lighthouse and the beach, $225 per person
  • Fort Pulaski Tour – this tour flies over Talmadge Bridge, historic downtown Savannah, Fort Jackson, and Fort Pulaski, $180 per person

If helicopter tours are not your thing, you can still celebrate National Aviation week by stopping by the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler.

2 – National Peach Month in Savannah

Did you know the state fruit of Georgia is the peach? This is why it is called the ‘peach state’ and during August, we can assure you it will be proudly celebrated during National Peach Month! Coincidentally (or not), peaches tend to be at their best during August.

Ways to enjoy peaches this month are to grab some from local farmer’s markets, sip on a peach cocktail, or enjoy peach dishes like delicious peach cobbler at the Peach Cobbler Factory on 51 Barnard St, or peach pie. You can make these yourself or find a local restaurant with peaches on the menu!

3 – National Farmers Market Week in Savannah

In early August, we will celebrate National Farmers Market week. In Savannah, we have several local farmers markets, but the most known is the Forsyth Farmers’ Market. Open on Saturdays, Forsyth Farmers’ Market is a great place to discover local fresh foods and support our local farmers and food vendors.

In August the farmers markets will most likely offer:

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Peas
  • Green beans
  • Cucumber
  • Melons
  • Peaches
  • Peanuts
  • Grapes

In addition to produce, local vendors often have homemade items for sale too.

And if you like hummus as much as we do, we highly recommend checking out one of our farm favorites Isreally Hummus (isn’t that a clever name?). Check out their website, Facebook page or booth at the farmer’s market!

4 –National Lighthouse Day in Savannah

The beginning of August brings two coastal holidays: On August 4th we celebrate National Coast Guard Day and then on August 7th we celebrate National Lighthouse Day. National Lighthouse Day is significant because it is a holiday commemorating the 1789 act that established lighthouses and other navigational guides to keep people sailing safe.

To celebrate this holiday, we recommend visiting some of the lighthouses along the Georgia coast including:

If you want to check out any of these lighthouses, we recommend going in the morning as severe weather can impact your ability to climb to the top or get on the ferry.

5 – Savannah Jazz’s Monthly Concert Series

Each month, Savannah Jazz puts on a monthly concert. If you are a member, this concert is free (just RSVP), but guests or nonmembers must pay $30.

This month, artist Jocelyn Gould is joined by Jackson and Maggie Evans on August 24th. Jocelyn has been praised as a leading mainstream jazz guitarist with her debut album ‘Elegant Traveler’ getting nominated for Jazz Album of the Year at the JUNO awards.

Cocktails start at 4:20pm and doors open at 4:40pm. You can learn more or buy tickets here
