Space

Welcome to Brick & Beam, an intimate luxury garden residence tucked inside one of Savannah's historic treasures.
Built in 1855 for George S. Gray, this remarkable brick residence has stood in the heart of Savannah's Historic District for more than 170 years. Today, its garden apartment offers something increasingly difficult to find: a stay that feels authentically historic, genuinely luxurious and unmistakably Savannah.
This is not a generic vacation rental dressed to look old.
The history is quite literally all around you.
Massive exposed timber beams stretch across extraordinary wood-plank ceilings. Original brick walls bring warmth and texture throughout the apartment. Historic fireplaces and architectural details speak to the home's 19th-century origins, while carefully selected furnishings, brass accents, beautiful lighting and an impressive collection of artwork create the feeling of a private designer residence.
The home is owned and curated by a high-end designer, and that sensibility is apparent throughout. Antique-inspired pieces sit comfortably beside contemporary furnishings. Historic textures are celebrated rather than covered. Artwork has been collected and placed intentionally, creating rooms that feel layered, sophisticated and residential rather than staged.
THE LIVING ROOM
The living room may be our favorite space in the apartment.
Exposed brick surrounds the room while enormous original-style timber beams and a wood-plank ceiling create an atmosphere you simply cannot reproduce in new construction.
A historic fireplace anchors the space, while comfortable upholstered seating, curated artwork, warm lighting and polished brass details create an inviting place to settle in after exploring Savannah.
Curl up with a book, enjoy a glass of wine before dinner, or simply look around. Brick & Beam is a home where the architecture itself is part of the experience.
THE BEDROOM
The bedroom continues the home's sophisticated, collected aesthetic with a beautifully dressed bed, layered textiles, statement artwork and carefully chosen furnishings.
The mood is intentionally quieter here, creating a comfortable retreat from the energy of downtown Savannah.
THE KITCHEN + DINING AREA
The kitchen blends modern convenience with the home's historic character.
Warm cabinetry, stone countertops, stainless appliances and thoughtful lighting sit beneath dramatic wood ceilings and exposed beams. An adjoining dining area creates an intimate place for breakfast, takeout from one of Savannah's exceptional restaurants, or a bottle of wine before heading out for the evening.
One of our favorite details is the historic preservation recognition displayed within the home, a subtle reminder that you're staying somewhere with a real place in Savannah's architectural story.
THE BATHROOM
The bathroom carries the same elevated aesthetic through rich finishes, beautiful hardware, warm wood tones and carefully considered details.
It is polished and modern without feeling disconnected from the historic residence surrounding it.
YOUR PRIVATE GARDEN COURTYARD
Then there is the garden.
Step outside and Brick & Beam opens into a beautiful private courtyard reserved exclusively for this apartment.
Historic brick walls surround a secluded outdoor retreat filled with mature greenery, tropical plantings, oversized planters and comfortable furnishings. Bluestone paving and multiple seating areas create an elegant extension of the apartment itself.
Start the morning here with coffee beneath the trees.
Come back in the afternoon for a quiet break between exploring Savannah's squares.
Pour a glass of wine before dinner.
Or return after an evening downtown and enjoy the stillness of your own garden in the middle of the Historic District.
Unlike many downtown properties, this courtyard is not shared with other guests. During your stay at Brick & Beam, the garden is yours.

Brick & Beam is small in scale but exceptional in character. For couples, solo travelers and guests who care about architecture, interiors and location, this is one of those Savannah stays where the home becomes part of the trip.

The Neighborhood

Brick & Beam puts you in an extraordinary pocket of Savannah's National Historic Landmark District, surrounded by some of the city's most beautiful architecture.
The residence sits beside Monterey Square, one of Savannah's celebrated historic squares, laid out in 1847 and centered around the Pulaski Monument. The square is also home to the famous Mercer-Williams House and sits along Savannah's beautiful Bull Street corridor.
Just south of Monterey Square is Forsyth Park, while immediately north you'll find Madison Square and some of the city's most celebrated architecture, shops and restaurants.
And only a block away is Jones Street, frequently regarded as one of Savannah's most beautiful streets.
This is the kind of location where the walk to breakfast becomes sightseeing.
Within roughly a quarter mile
You have an extraordinary amount of Savannah within just a few blocks of the front door.
Eat + Drink
Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room - One of Savannah's quintessential Southern dining experiences, famous for family-style Southern cooking on historic Jones Street.
Gryphon Tea Room - An elegant SCAD-operated tea room on Madison Square, perfect for lunch or afternoon tea in an exceptionally beautiful historic setting.
Crystal Beer Parlor - A beloved old-Savannah institution for casual food, drinks and local character.
Clary's Cafe - A classic Savannah breakfast and lunch spot and longtime neighborhood favorite.
Savannah Coffee Roasters - A historic Savannah coffee company and an excellent stop for locally roasted coffee, breakfast and pastries.
The Public Kitchen & Bar - Elevated casual American dining and cocktails on Liberty Street.
And this is only the beginning. Continue walking north through the Historic District and you'll reach favorites including Collins Quarter, Husk, Flying Monk Noodle Bar, Little Duck Diner and many more.
Shop + Browse
This neighborhood is particularly special for guests interested in interiors, antiques, art and design, which feels especially appropriate when staying at Brick & Beam.
The surrounding Bull Street, Jones Street and Design District area is filled with independent shops, antique dealers and galleries.
Explore Jones & Bull for distinctive home décor and vintage finds, browse E. Shaver Booksellers near Madison Square, discover art and design by SCAD artists at shopSCAD, or wander through the antique shops and independent boutiques surrounding Monterey Square and the nearby Design District.
Around Monterey Square itself, you'll find antique books, maps, prints, furnishings and decorative objects in shops that feel perfectly at home among the neighborhood's 19th-century architecture.

Getting around

Brick & Beam is located in one of the most walkable portions of downtown Savannah.
For most guests, walking will be the best way to experience the city. Savannah's compact blocks and interconnected historic squares make getting somewhere half the fun.
From the apartment, you can easily walk through Monterey Square to Forsyth Park, stroll Jones Street, browse the Design District, wander north along Bull Street through Madison and Chippewa Squares, stop for lunch or cocktails, and continue toward Broughton Street and the riverfront.
Savannah's free DOT downtown transportation system can also help you move around the Historic District when you'd rather give your feet a break.
Uber and Lyft are readily available throughout downtown.
A car can be helpful for excursions outside the Historic District, but it is certainly not necessary for enjoying the heart of Savannah from this location.

Guest Access

Guests have private access to the entire Brick & Beam garden apartment during their stay.
Most importantly, guests also have exclusive access to the furnished private garden courtyard shown in the photographs. This is not a communal courtyard shared with other rentals.
The apartment has its own private living spaces, kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities, allowing you to settle in and experience Savannah more like a resident than a hotel guest.
Self check-in makes arrival easy, and once you're here, one of the greatest luxuries is how rarely you'll need a car.

Other things to note

A REAL HISTORIC RESIDENCE
Brick & Beam occupies the garden level of a genuine mid-19th-century Savannah residence, not a modern reproduction.
The George Gray House dates to 1855, and the exposed brick, timber construction, fireplaces and architectural character visible throughout the apartment are precisely what make this home special.
Historic homes are inherently different from newly constructed hotels. Floors, walls, masonry and other details may reflect the age and evolution of the building. We consider those characteristics part of the experience and encourage guests seeking perfectly uniform new construction to keep this in mind.
GARDEN-LEVEL RESIDENCE
Brick & Beam is a garden-level apartment, which is part of what gives the home its extraordinary exposed masonry, intimate atmosphere and direct relationship with the private courtyard.
The listing photographs accurately represent the layout, natural light and character of the residence.
PRIVATE COURTYARD
The furnished garden courtyard shown in the listing photographs is exclusively for guests of Brick & Beam. However, please note that we block off access to the spiral staircase that goes up to the balconies of the other residences. Considering that, there ar other guests that can be walking around their balconies/decks and have visibility to your patio. We're all friends here so feel free to say a welcoming hello or head-nod if you see us :)
HISTORIC FIREPLACES
The fireplaces contribute to the home's historic character but should not be used or attempted to use.
A HOME FOR DESIGN + HISTORY LOVERS
This residence has been thoughtfully furnished and includes distinctive artwork, antiques and decorative pieces.
We ask guests to treat the home and its contents with the same care they would give a private residence.

Brandon and Chase were very responsive to any questions we had during our five night stay. It was our first visit to Savannah so we were not entirely sure where to stay and picked this listing on a whim. It was PERFECT. We were within 2 blocks of Forsyth Park and enjoyed the farmer’s market on a Saturday! We were within walking distance to everything within the historic district. The space itself was amazing! Lots of unique decor choices that went well with the age of the building and thoughtful original art pieces! The kitchen was very modern and well-thought out for the space. It had everything we would need (if we had cooked!). The bed was very comfortable. One of the reasons we booked this property was the washer and dryer (a must when traveling for over a week with an infant). Both were easily accessible and easy to use. Brandon & Chase thought of everything you might need while traveling. If we go back to Savannah, I would 100% stay here again.

My husband and I visited Savannah for a conference, but little did we know we would get a mini vacation out of it. This home has a beautiful vintage feel preserving Savannah’s historic elegance. We thoroughly enjoyed the details of the home and the spaces. Our stay was peaceful, comfortable, and memorable. The hosts thought of everything! So many little details that really elevated the experience and made you feel at home. The street is lovely and quiet which is rare in this area. Even a walk around the neighborhood is an experience with cute little coffee shops and antique locations. An issue with the AC did come up, but Brandon and Chase were readily available to figure out the next steps to keep us comfortable. The issue was resolved as quickly as the repairmen could address it. They were also so kind and welcoming throughout our stay and very quick to respond. I would highly recommend this home, and when we’re able to visit Savannah again, we would love to come back here!
