Brief History of Wag-O-Ween

Wag-O-Ween is a family- and pet-friendly trick-or-treat event in Savannah. This community tradition started in 2006 as a parade to benefit local animal rescues by local businesswoman, Sara Portman.

After Sara passed away in 2020, Locally Made Savannah and Renegade Paws Rescue took over organizing the event, helping to establish the Sara Portman Community Fund. A portion of the annual proceeds from Wag-O-Ween is donated to this fund, which helps with spay and neuter efforts in the local community. The remaining proceeds from sponsorships, raffles, and ticket sales are donated to local animal rescues, helping to place rescued animals with loving families in their forever homes.

Why Attend Wag-O-Ween in Savannah?

Trick-or-Treating

During Wag-O-Ween, participants (dogs and their humans!) can go trick-or-treating for dog treats at more than a hundred participating businesses in the Downtown and Starland Districts in Savannah. During registration, you’ll receive a map with all the participating businesses, which will also be marked with a “bone marker” outside.

Wiener Races

The Wiener Races at Wag-O-Ween are one of the highlights of the event!

During the races, all dogs (not just dachshunds!) can participate in a friendly race across Pulaski Square. Dogs will be sorted into two categories — Weiner Dogs and “Weiners at Heart” (all other breeds). Races with six dogs at a time are held throughout the weekend, and the finals, featuring the winning dog from each race in both categories, occur at 4 PM each day. Participation is $5 per dog.

Photo Contest

What’s a Halloween event without a costume? Before heading to Wag-O-Ween, dress the whole family up in their Halloween costumes (dogs included!) for a chance to win the photo contest. The winners will be announced at Pulaski Square.

Raffle Prizes

Raffle stands are available at Pulaski Square and Starland Yard during Wag-O-Ween. Tickets cost $5 each or $20 for five. All the funds raised will support participating animal shelters, so you can feel good about your donation — win or lose!
